Some cookware items, including pots and pans, coffee makers, air fryers, and baking sheets, are made with materials and chemicals that have been found to be hazardous to human health or the environment - such as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also commonly referred to as "forever chemicals").
Thankfully,
California and several other states have already taken action to protect consumers. California requires that manufacturers of cookware (including bakeware and kitchen appliances like coffee makers) publicly disclose any intentional use of PFAS and other problematic chemicals and clearly label all cookware items that contain intentionally-added PFAS both on a physical label and on the product page online. And some states, like
Maine,
Minnesota, and
Colorado, have outright banned PFAS from cookware sold in their states to protect consumers.
But PFAS cookware items are still being sold online and in stores in many states (often without clear labeling for consumers on the product / at point of sale), even though there are many PFAS-free safe, affordable, durable options available.
Studies have found that nearly all people in the U.S. have PFAS in their blood, and we've already seen that phasing out specific PFAS has reduced Americans' exposure to that PFAS -- if we want to reduce our exposure to all PFAS, we need to stop using these chemicals in everyday consumer goods like cookware.
Join us in asking manufacturers and retailers to phase out the intentional use of PFAS in all cookware! Forever chemicals don't belong in our kitchens!
