Oppose Data Center Tax and Environmental Review Exemptions ~ Push Back against Big Tech!

There is a concerted effort in Minnesota (and around the country) to incentivize the construction & operation of hyper-scale data centers - projects being pushed by Big Tech (Amazon, Meta, Google, Etc) primarily to meet the intense computing needs of AI. In Minnesota, we are seeing this come in the form of proposed exemptions from tax and environmental review... we need to push back!

Some Key Info on Data Centers in Minnesota:

  • If the 10 proposed data centers in Minnesota are built and come online, they'll require as much electrical energy as 2.3 million of our households.
  • The billionaires proposing these projects are benefiting from a 2011 state law that exempts data centers from paying sales tax on hardware, software or electricity.
  • These facilities offer very few long-term post-construction jobs.
  • The 250 backup diesel generators being proposed in the Becker facility have a combined output capacity equaling the Prairie Island Nuclear facility we have no guarantees that they will only be run for short windows of time.
