Express Opposition to Budget Reconciliation Proposals

Dear WAICU Advocate,

On May 22nd, the 2025 Budget Reconciliation Bill passed through the House and is now heading to the Senate for review. With Senate activity looming, it is more important than ever that we engage with our senators in the coming weeks. We must express strong opposition to the House-passed cuts to federal student aid programs that will be reviewed in the Senate.

The reconciliation bill proposes massive changes that will dramatically harm students in accessing college in Wisconsin, particularly those attending private, nonprofit colleges. We need your support to ensure that our voices are heard as this is being discussed in the Senate.

The bill imposes penalties on private colleges for student loan outcomes, Iimits Pell Grant eligibility, cuts loan benefits, caps graduate borrowing, limits federal aid based on median costs, and increases taxes on university endowments, all of which reduce financial support and accessibility for students.

Please reach out to Senators Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson to express your concern and opposition to the harmful changes to federal student aid programs using the following letter.
